David Henry Engel

David Henry Engel of Hudson, IA, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones, after a brief illness, on Monday, February 24, 2025, at his home. He was 74 years old. 

Dave was born on January 8, 1951, to Henry and Annemarie (Dohrn) Engel. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1969. One night on July 4th,1972 Dave was at the Baraka Bar in Crossroads Mall, for good old dime draws, when he met the love of his life, Penny Bowman. They were married on December 1, 1972, in Hudson. They were married for almost 53 years. 

Dave was a great mechanic. He worked for Ubbens DX (1969-1984) with Ted and Gordy Ubben, owned and operated Engel’s Service Center from 1984 to 1990 and most recently was a mechanic for Bill Colwell Ford from 1990 to 2024.

Dave was an active member of Son’s of AMVETS Post 82 for many years and worked the steak and fish frys. He even helped with the fish tournaments. He spent countless hours in his garage and enjoyed woodworking, making chili and horseradish for family and friends. Dave also was an avid DX memorabilia collector. But the biggest accomplishment for Dave was his four boys, Ryan, Dustin, Andy, and BJ.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Annemarie Engel.

He is survived by his wife, Penny, of Hudson, IA; four sons, Ryan (Heather and Jake) of Hudson, IA, Dustin (special friend Sue Liddle) of Hudson, Andrew (Kelly) of Reinbeck, and BJ (Amanda) of Hudson, IA; Grandchildren, Tyler (Keiara) Delagardelle, Riley Delagardelle, Connor Engel, Cole Engel, Ella Engel, Addy Engel, Brett Engel, and Kinsey Engel; two great-grandchildren, Greyson Engel and Hadley Delagardelle; and one sister, Gesche (Lynn) Petersen of Hudson, IA.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm at AMVETS Post 82, 123 Eldora Rd, Hudson IA.
