Delbert Dean Weidman

September 24, 1934 — February 17, 2025

Waterloo

Delbert Dean Weidman of Waterloo, IA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Monday, February 17, 2025, at MercyOne Hospital in Waterloo. He was 90 years old.

Delbert was born on September 24, 1934, in Waterloo, IA, to Elmer and Marie (Hemsath) Weidman. One night, on a blind date at a church hayride, he met the love of his life, JoAnn Chase. What he didn’t mention that night was that he had just been in jail the day before for driving without a license—but once JoAnn found out, she didn’t mind. Their love story continued, and they married on February 9, 1957, at Faith Reformed Church in Waterloo. They spent 70 years together and shared 68 years of marriage.

Shortly before their wedding, Delbert was drafted into the U.S. Army. In April of 1957, he left for Fort Hood, TX, and was later stationed in Germany. He served his country with pride for two years, earning multiple medals, which he proudly displayed. He was honorably discharged in 1959. While in the Army, Delbert also received his GED, an accomplishment he carried with pride.

After his discharge, Delbert and JoAnn returned to Iowa. He worked at Powers Manufacturing before becoming the Director of Plant Operations for MercyOne (previously Schiotz and Covenant), where he remained until his retirement at age 62.

Outside of work, Delbert had a passion for restoring classic cars. He was especially proud of his 1951 Ford, which won multiple trophies at car shows. He also enjoyed traveling in his motorhome, spending many winters in Arizona—though JoAnn may not have always shared his level of enthusiasm for RV life.

Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Jeffery Weidman, and six siblings.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his children, Randy (Patti) Weidman, Timothy (Monica) Weidman, Eric Weidman, and Ryan (Janice) Weidman; his daughter-in-law, Denise Weidman; seven grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held, with Military Rites performed by the U.S. Army and Evansdale Amvets Post 31.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Community Church in Waterloo, IA (3520 Ansborough Ave, Waterloo, IA).
