Born in the family home in Dewar, Iowa, Evelyn was welcomed by her parents Ernest (Mike) and Pearl (Myers) Hemsath on November the 29th, of the year 1927. Her early years were full with 7 siblings, attending a one room school house.
After graduating from East High School, class of 1947, she married John (Jack) L Winder on November 27, 1947. They raised 5 children, one daughter and four sons.
Many happy years were spent at the cabin on the Wapsi River, with every season, from fishing to ice skating. As the kids grew, grandkids entered, then great grandkids. Hosting regular weekend family get togethers at the cabin, where grandkids looked forward to boat rides, sandbars and most of all the renowned tire swing.
They were the family glue, and they truly loved it. As the family grew, holidays continued in the place they called home for 70 years. There is no better example for their family than the one they showed.
They ran Winder Sport Shop, 197 West Mullan Waterloo, with brother Dale Winder, retiring in 1985.
Retirement brought more time to enjoy family, the Wapsi, and hopping in the car with the Hemsath siblings and spouses for a ‘going to hell day’.
Evelyn didn’t miss many Iowa Hawkeye basketball or football games. She’d mute the TV and listen to her preferred radio announcers. Always a loyal Cubs fan, no matter the losses, it’s so deserving she saw them win the World Series in her lifetime.
Evelyn enjoyed her extensive gardens, bird watching, mall walking and crocheting, She can rest knowing family will never be short of crocheted items, for generations to come.
Known as Grandma Evie, anyone will tell you, her windows were clean and cookie jar full.
We won’t forget to shut the garage door grandma Evie.
Evelyn is survived by 4 children, John (Kathy) of Janesville, Jim of Cedar Falls, Bob (Joy) of Waterloo, and Tom (Audra) of Marshfield, Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson due November 2024.
