Suzanne Ruth Thomas Lewis, 84, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024, after a life filled with love, dedication, and service to others. She lived a full and selfless life, leaving behind a legacy of cherished memories and a profound impact on all who knew her.
Suzanne was born on June 7, 1940, in Traer, Iowa, to John and Euterpa Thomas. She graduated from Traer High School in 1958 and attended Wartburg College before marrying her beloved husband, Duane (Lou) Lewis, in 1960. Together, they raised three children: David Lewis of Stella, MO; LuAnne (Lonnie) Bibler of Waverly, IA; and Andrea (Dale) Erickson of Waterloo, IA. Suzanne was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: James (Jodi) McGrane, Robert Wright, Ryan (Madeline) McGrane, Doug (Lesa) McGrane, Heather Lewis, Shane Wright, Gabe (Mercedez) Lewis, and Michael Lewis, and she was blessed with twelve great-grandchildren who were the light of her life.
Family was at the heart of everything Suzanne did. She cherished many happy memories spent with her siblings, including Candy (Greg) Glasco, Cheri (Gary) Cederlund, and John M. Thomas, along with countless family vacations. Suzanne was known for her love of cooking, particularly her famous potato salad, trifle, strawberry pretzel salad, pies, and decadent brownies with frosting, all of which became requested staples at family gatherings.
Suzanne’s work history was diverse. She began her career in Traer at Ralls 5 & 10, followed by detasseling and pool management. After the birth of her children, Suzanne worked from home, selling Amway, and later contributed her time to the Waterloo Community Playhouse. Her career culminated in a rewarding position with the Waterloo Community Schools, from which she retired in 2004.
A devout member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Suzanne was deeply involved in church activities, including singing in the choir and serving community meals. She was also an active member of PEO for over 63 years, dedicating her time and energy to various causes in her community. Suzanne also found joy in her involvement with Landmark Commons, where she participated in the choir, led the choir, and socialized by playing card games with friends.
Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents, John and Euterpa Thomas; her sister, Paula Ewing Lehmeier; her grandson, Shane Wright; and her great-grandson, Carson McGrane.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched with kindness, generosity, and grace.
A funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, December 3rd, at 11:15 AM, with visitation starting at 10:00 AM. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
